What Is Float Glass?
Float glass is a type of flat glass produced by floating molten glass on a bed of molten tin. This process creates a perfectly flat, uniform sheet with excellent optical clarity and consistent thickness โ making it the universal base material for the glass industry.
Virtually all processed glass products โ including tempered glass, laminated glass, insulated glass, Low-E glass, and mirrors โ start as float glass. The quality of the raw float glass directly determines the quality of the final product, which is why sourcing from reliable manufacturers is critical.

Benefits of Float Glass
High Optical Clarity
Exceptional transparency with minimal distortion โ ideal for vision glass
Uniform Thickness
Float process ensures consistent thickness across the entire sheet
Smooth Surface
Both surfaces are fire-polished flat, ready for coating or processing
Excellent Processability
Can be tempered, laminated, coated, bent, drilled, and edge-processed
Cost-Effective
Most economical base material for all glass processing applications
Wide Application Range
From architectural facades to automotive, furniture, solar panels, and electronics
Brand Quality Assurance
Sourced from Xinyi, CSG, Jinjing โ consistent performance guaranteed
Coating Compatible
Suitable for Low-E, reflective, self-cleaning, and decorative coatings
Float Glass vs Processed Glass
| Property | Float Glass (Raw) | Processed Glass |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Single glass sheet | Multi-layer or heat-treated |
| Function | Base material for processing | Performance glass (safety, insulation, etc.) |
| Energy Efficiency | Low โ single pane only | High โ with Low-E coating and IGU |
| Safety | Fragile โ breaks into sharp shards | Tempered (safe granules) or Laminated (held by interlayer) |
| Applications | Raw material for glass factories | Final product for buildings, vehicles, furniture |
Float Glass is the foundation of all glass products.
Processed glass (tempered, laminated, insulated) is built on high-quality float glass โ making raw material quality the most critical factor in final product performance.
FAQs About Float Glass
What is float glass made of?
Float glass is made from silica sand, soda ash (sodium carbonate), limestone, and dolomite. These raw materials are melted at approximately 1,500ยฐC, then the molten glass is floated on a bath of molten tin to create a perfectly flat, uniform sheet. The glass is then slowly cooled (annealed) in a lehr to relieve internal stresses.
What thickness of float glass is available?
Standard float glass thicknesses range from 3mm to 19mm. Common architectural thicknesses include 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm. For specialized applications, thicker sheets (15mm, 19mm) are also available. We stock all standard thicknesses for fast delivery.
Can float glass be tempered?
Yes. Float glass is the base material for tempered glass production. The float glass is heated to approximately 620ยฐC and rapidly cooled to create tempered (toughened) glass. Not all float glass is suitable for tempering โ quality factors like nickel sulfide inclusions and surface condition matter, which is why we source only from top-tier brands.
What is the difference between float glass and ultra-clear glass?
Ultra-clear glass (also called low-iron glass or extra-clear glass) is a type of float glass with significantly reduced iron content. Standard clear float has a slight green tint (especially visible on edges) due to iron oxide. Ultra-clear glass removes most of this iron, resulting in higher light transmittance (91%+ vs 85-87%) and true color neutrality.
How is float glass packed for export?
We offer multiple packing options: wooden crates (most common for sea freight), steel racks (for large volumes), and plywood cases. All packing includes interleaving paper or powder between sheets, foam edge protection, and steel strapping. Packing is designed to meet international shipping standards and minimize breakage risk.
